Race Report: The War Memorial
The GW Sailing Team participated in MAISA’s (Mid Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association) Fall championship, the War Memorial Trophy, this previous weekend at St. Mary’s College of Maryland. St. Mary’s, the defending National Champions, put on a very impressive regatta. The A and B division teams for each school raced simultaneously in a brand new fleet of 36 boats, centered around their also-brand-new sailing center located on a beautiful inlet off the Chesapeake Bay.
GW had not qualified for the War Memorial in decades, owing to the fact that MAISA is considered the deepest and most competitive conference in the country. The top 18 teams are selected through a series of local qualifiers in September and October, and then meet to see which teams can advance to Atlantic Coast Dinghies (1st eight teams), or the Atlantic Coast Tournament (9th-15th placed teams). It is safe to say that the impressive progress our team has made in the last two years (New boats, successful recruiting and practicing daily against Georgetown) has greatly contributed to our ability to qualify this year. The 45 teams that make up the MAISA conference annually fight hard to earn a spot at the War Memorial, and so we were very proud to get in.
Saturday was overcast and relatively windless, despite the fact that the forecast called for up to 25 knots of breeze. As could be expected at an event like this, there were no bad teams. One mistake was likely to position you firmly at the back of the fleet, especially if it occurred on the first leg. A Division raced in 420 dinghies on Saturday, with B Division sailing FJ’s (The kind of boat that GW’s own fleet is made up of). Junior Will Ricketson and sophomore Hilly Walrod sailed in A division, and had some struggles getting acclimated to the 420. Nevertheless, they were competitive throughout the day, the highlight being a 7th place finish on race #3. Juniors Meredith Carroll and Anne Laterra were steady and productive in B Division, keeping GW in contention for qualifying through smart sailing and consistency. In a strange twist, the weather warmed throughout the day, reaching the 70’s by late afternoon.
Sunday, November 1st, was a different story, however. Everyone was reminded what late Fall is supposed to feel like, with driving rain coming down and temperatures in the 40s. Switching to FJ’s with the rest of A division, Will and Hilly seemed much more comfortable and had a satisfactory day of racing. Meredith and Anne duplicated their solid performance in B division from Saturday, and notched a 7th place in race #17 to cap their day.
When all was said and done, GW had qualified for the Atlantic Coast Tournament at Cornell. This is a big accomplishment for our team, considering that we are a completely student-run and student-funded organization.
Thanks for following our progress, and cheer us on as we compete in the last two events of what has been a breakout season for the GW Sailing Team!
